A group of Canadians has developed a simple DIY method to remove a variety of rings, including those made from parts from the plane’s engines and tail sections.
The technique involves drilling small holes into the inside of a ring, then taking it apart and replacing the components with new ones, said the group’s founder, Robert D’Amico.
The rings are also made of a new material that’s less prone to cracking.
“It’s a very cheap and easy process,” he said.
“You just need a drill, a drill bit and some patience.”
D’AMICO said he has been contacted by about 10 other people who want to try out the DIY method.
“The only thing we really had to do was make it really small, so you don’t get the rings out of your car,” he explained.
The group is also offering a $99 service plan that includes the DIY drill.
“We’re going to offer them on the website for $99 a piece, which is pretty reasonable,” he added.
The plan also includes a lifetime warranty on the drill and other parts, and a lifetime supply of parts.
The ring removal is the latest in a growing trend of DIYers who are taking the world by storm.
Last year, the DIY movement was named as one of the world’s top 10 most innovative movements, according to the Movement Innovation Index by the New York-based nonprofit Global Innovation Network.
D’Ameo said he believes the ring removal method is unique, but the group is currently working to develop an inexpensive, easy-to-use version.
“If you are someone who just wants to replace an old ring and is not into getting fancy or doing it all by yourself, then it’s probably not for you,” he noted.
He said the DIY ring removal process can be used to replace a variety from tires to car bumpers, to replace rings on the sides of a door, and even to replace worn rings.
“I’m hoping it’ll be a way to get people to actually look at the rings that they’ve bought and start thinking about how they can make that ring better,” he told The Canadian Press.
Dallaire said he’s not looking to profit from his ring removal, but is simply doing it for his wife, who has a rare form of diabetes and has been using the rings to help her keep control of her blood sugar levels.
The DIY ring removers are being tested out by a few people in the group, but D’Ambico said they hope to expand to more people.
“They’re making a lot of money, but they are really trying to help other people,” he lamented.
“When I was growing up, the whole idea of DIY was, ‘I can make things I don’t need, but I can make them that I do.’
And that’s the way we’re trying to go.”
Dallaires is now hoping his ring remover can be incorporated into his daily life.
“Hopefully someday, I’ll be able to go back to the way it was when I was younger, and be able make something myself,” he quipped.
